Is it better for me to buy a guitar without a pickguard? Does
the pickguard absorb sound?

Answer:
If the guitar has a normal Martin, Guild, Taylor, etc. sized pickguard,
it will have no
noticeable effect on the sound. The pickguard would have to
be very large covering both sides of the soundhole and maybe more
before noticeable dampening of sound would occur.
