Standard clearance between the underside of the Bass E string and the top of the 12th fret is 5/32" (.156")

The same thing for the High E string is 1/32" less or 4/32" (.125")


Now for the nut height...

Fret the string in question between the 2nd & 3rd frets. This helps if you're near-sighted but look under the string at the 1st fret. There should be a very small gap between the string and the top of the first fret. Only enough gap so you can just barely see light. If you can't see it, pluck the string over the first fret. If it sounds, it isn't touching, if it doesn't sound, it IS touching.
